MIL-U-45995
3.4.3 Fastening devices. All screws, pins, bolts, and similar parts shall be
installed with means for adjustment and preventing loss of tightness. All parts
subject to removal or adjustment shall not be swaged, peened, staked or otherwise
permanently deformed.
3.4.4 Threads. Threads shall be conformed to FED-STD-H28 and the applicable
Detailed Standards referenced therein.
3.5 Performance characteristics.
3.5.1 Capacity. Undercutter shall be suitable for undercutting mica on
commutators up to at least 6 inches in diameter and on armatures up to at least 7
inches in diameter. Distance between centers shall be adjustable up to at least 18
inches.
3.5.2 Depth of cut. The depth of cut shall-be regulated by an adjustable stop,
the ranges of which shall be such as to accommodate commutators up to 6 inches in
diameter. The 0.25 inch diameter saw shall cut to a depth of at least 0.025 inch.
3.6 Components. The undercutter shall consist essentially of electrical
components, frame, armature holding supports, stop, stop collars, and motor carriage.
3.7 Motor. The motor shall be of the universal type, continuous duty, suitable
for operation on both 115 volts direct current and 115 volt, 60 hertz, single phase
alternating current. The motor shall have a rating of at least 1/12 horsepower and
shall conform to the requirements of UL 45. The spindle shall be of steel, ground and
mounted on ball or roller bearings, and case hardened to 63-65 Rockwell C hardness.
The spindle shall be either belt-driven from the drive motor or an integral part of
the driven motor. The spindle arbor shall be 0.125 inch diameter and case hardened
63-65 Rockwell C hardness and shall be suitable for mounting cutters specified in
3.13.
3.8 Frame. The frame shall be of' structural steel, or-metal castings, with
finished and polished cross members on which the motor carriage and armature supports
shall slide freely without binding or chatter, and readily clamp in position. End
sections of the frame shall be provided with mounting holes at each end for mounting
to a workbench.
3.9 Armature holding support. The armature holding support shall be of suitable
cast or fabricated metal mounted to the cross member support by means of a thumb screw
clamp arrangement for rapid adjustment-and for adequate clearance between the supports
for the centered armature shafts.
3.10 Armature support adjustment. The armature shall be provided with V blocks
to support unentered armatures up to at least 7 inches in diameter and with 60 degree
steel center points with means provided for thumb adjustments of points.
3.11 Spindle stops.
Adjustable stops shall be provided to control saw travel.
3.12 Spindle motor carriage. The spindle motor carriage shall support the motor
in horizontal position. Carriage supports shall be provided to allow the motor and
spindle to traverse the required length of cut, while maintaining the motor in a
horizontal position.
