4.6.1 Electric motor test. Prior to approval of the first shipment the
contractor shall submit satisfactory evidence to the contracting officer or his
authorized representative that the motor used on the undercutter has been tested and
meets the requirements of UL 45 and, except as otherwise specified herein, shall be in
accordance with NEMA MG-1. The motor shall have a rating of at least 1/12 horsepower _
and shall operate on both 115 volts direct current and 115 volts 60 hertz single phase
alternating current. Failure to meet the requirements of UL 45 or applicable
requirement ts of NEMA MG-1, or failure to operate at the required voltages shall be
cause for rejection.
4.6.2 Performance test. The undercutter shall undercut the mica on an armature
to the maximum depth using a 0.375 inch diameter, 0.035 inch width cutter. Binding of
the carriage or collars, chattering of the cutter, or overheating of the motor during
the test shall be cause for rejection.
4.6.3 Hardness test. Rockwell C hardness tests shall be performed on the
components listed below, or on test samples processed concurrently with the
components. Failure of a component or sample to meet the required hardness number
shall be cause for rejection. A Certificate of Conformance (COC) may be accepted for
a component in lieu of the test, provided the COC is signed by an officer of the
original equipment manufacturer of that component.

4.6.4 Painting test. The surface of a sample part shall be used to conduct the
painting test. The sample part shall be of identical material and have the same
surface finish as one of the parts in the finished undercoating spray outfit. The
sample part shall be painted at the same time as the undercoating spray outfit using
the same paint and the same painting process. The protective paint coating shall be
not less than 0.002 inch in thickness. The paint adhesion shall be adequate to the
extent that no paint shall be peeled by application and removal of fiberglass tape
over two intersecting cuts exposing the base metal for a distance of not less than 2
inches. Depress a sharpened H and HB hardness wooden lead pencil vertically onto the
surface of the painted sample part until the lead crushes or breaks. The H hardness
pencil lead shall leave no indentation in the painting surface. Failure of this
painting test including hardness shall be cause for rejection.
4.7 Packaging inspection. Packaging inspection shall be conducted before and
after packaging to determine compliance with the requirements of Section 5.
5 PACKAGING (see 6.2.1)
5.1 Miliatary preservation and packing. When specified in the contract,
requirements for level A preservation, and levels A or B packing shall be in
accordance with MIL-M-18058.
5.2 Marking. When military levels of preservation and packing are specified,
marking shall be in accordance with the retirements of MIL-STD-129.
