3.6.1.1 Protective screen. A protective mesh screen shall be provided to
cover the open end of the heat discharge tube. The mesh size shall be such that
an object 1/8 inch by 1/8 inch by 1/8 inch or larger shall not pass through the
screen. The screen shall be separated from the heater element by at least 0.50
inch, and shall be designed to withstand without degradation the temperatures to
which it will be subjected.
*
3.6.2 Electrical equipment. All electrical equipment and wiring, except
when otherwise specified herein, shall be in accordance with NFPA 70.
3.6.2.1 Blower and motor. The blower shall be located so that it cools the
motor as well as deliver air in accordance with the requirements specified
herein. The motor shall conform to the requirements of CC-M-1807 and operate
from 120 or 115 volts, 60 Hz, single phase alternating current.
*
3.6.2.2 Temperature rise. The heating element shall be insulated from other
components of the heater gun so that the following temperature rises are not
exceeded when the heater gun is operated in an ambient temperature of +75°F
(a) Body temeprature adjacent to the nozzle shall be no more than
above ambient.
(b) Body temperature adjacent to the motor shall be no more than 50°F above
ambient.
(c) Nozzle temperature shall be no more than 300°F above ambient.
*
3.6.2.3 Electric control switch. The electric control switch may be either
a toggle or rocker switch. The switch shall have three positions: one to operate
the blower and heating element, one to operate the blower only, and one off
position. When an automatic release switch is furnished, provision shall be made
for locking the switch in each operating position. The switch shall be furnished
with a permanent guard that shall minimize the likelihood of inadvertent
actuation of the switch. The guard shall not interfere with normal operation of
the gun. When the heater control switch is turned off, the switch will return to
the fan or blower position before going to "total off" for the heater gun.
*
3.6.2.4 Power supply cord. Unless otherwise specified (see 6.2.1), the
heater gun shall be wired with not less than six feet -of three-conductor,
flexible electrical cord. The cord shall conform to NFPA 70 with a voltage and
current-carrying capacity not less than the voltage and current rating of the
motor and heater element. The power supply cord shall be oil and abrasive
resistant, neoprene jacketed, and provided with a three-prong plug.
3.6.3 Air regulator. The heater gun shall incorporate an air regulating
system which shall control the discharge air within the temperature range,
volume, and velocity specified herein. Suitable markings shall be provided and
shall be associated with the adjustment means to permit varying the temperature
within the specified heat range. The markings shall indicate the direction of
adjustment for increasing and decreasing the discharge air temperature.
