MIL-L-14575F
* 3.4.5 Threads. All machined threads shall conform to FED-STD-H28 and the
applicable detailed standards referenced therein.
3.4.5 Lubrications. All bearings (except sealed-for-life type), mating gears,
and sliding parts shall be provied with standard means for lubrication. Oil holes,
grease fittings, and filler-caps shall be accessible without requiring disassembly
of functional parts. Lubrication reservoirs, if applicable, shall have means for
checking levels.
Safety and health requirements. Safety devices shall be provided for all

parts presenting safety hazards. Guards shall be removable to provide easy access
to guarded parts. The lathe shall comply with the general safety and health
requirements promulgated under 29CFR 1910 that are applicable to the machine itself.
Exceptions and additional requirements for safety and health shall be as specified
in the contract (see 6.2.1 and 6.5).
* 3.4.8 Interchangeability. All parts of the end item shall be manufactured to
definite standards and tolerances that will provide for the interchangeability of
respective Parts between end items of the same model. All replacement parts shall
be `interchangeable with their respective original parts, and fit/function with
mating components.
* 3.4.9 Surfaces. Surfaces of all castings, forgings, molded parts, stampings, and
welded parts shall be cleaned and free of sand, dirt, fins, sprues, scale, flux, and
other harmful or extraneous materials.
3.5 performance and product characteristics.
3.5.1 Commutator turning. With an armature shaft supported by headstock and
tailstock chucks, the lathe shall be capable of machining the commutator to an
accuracy within 0.0005 inch total indicator reading runout and a taper of not more
than 0.005 inch per linear inch of the turned cylindrical surface. The machined
surface shall have a roughness height value of not more than 63 microinches,
arithmetical average (aa), in accordance with ANSI B46.1.
3.5.2 Mica undercutting. With the armature supported as in 3.5.1, and the
undercutter equipped with a saw(s), the device shall be capable of undercutting the
0.0050 inch. The
mica between all bars of the commutator to a depth of 0.0313
undercut shall be parallel to the centerline within
0.005 inch for its full
length and width.
inch swing over the bed and
3.5.3 Capacity. The lathe shall have at least a six
and undercutting commutators
undercutter carriage. It shall be capable of machining
inches in length. The
up to, and including, 3.3125 inches in diameter and 2.5
13 inches in length, shaft
lathe shall accommodate armatures up to, and including,
included.
3.6 Components
3.6.1 Lathe bed. The lathe bed shall be sufficiently strong and rigid, with
machined and finished bearing surfaces, to assure the accuracies specified herein.
When specified (see 6.2.1), a sub-base shall be provided to permit leveling of the
lathe on bench.
